Joint Open Letter to Wes Streeting | GMC Failures and Need of Reform

10/03/26

UKMFA, HART, DFPUK and CCVAC Joint Open Letter (signed by nearly 90 doctors, healthcare professionals and academics) to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting, and the National Guardian's Office, raising serious concerns about the General Medical Council (GMC). This includes that GMC and MPTS 'Fitness to Practice' hearings are inconsistent - either overly harsh, or recklessly lax. There is also clear abuse of the GMC referral process to silence whistleblowers speaking out against Government or NHS policies, with politically motivated cases being brought against dissenting doctors.

We call on Wes Streeting and the National Guardian's Office to investigate bias in the GMC and MPTS, declare a moratorium on censorship in the NHS, ensure effective whistleblower protection on national policy issues, and exclude those with financial ties or conflicts of interest from senior decision-making roles.
