Reject Assisted Suicide

Due to the failure of the Leadbeater Assisted Dying Bill to complete its progress through the House of Lords before the end of the last Parliamentary session, in part due to over 1000 amendments put forward by peers to try to address the fundamental flaws and gaping safeguarding holes in the Bill, that Bill fell on 24 April 2026.  In March 2026, Scottish MSPs voted down a similar Bill in Holyrood, MSP Liam MacArthur's Assisted Dying for Terminally Ill Adults (Scotland) Bill, ending the threat of Assisted Suicide in Scotland for now.

However, in Westminster, Kim Leadbeater and her supporters are determined to resurrect the Assisted Dying Bill in the new Parliamentary session, and have persuaded Labour MP Lauren Edwards, drawn second in this session's Private Members' Bill Ballot, to reintroduce the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill.  The Second Reading of Lauren Edward's Private Member's Bill is expected to be on Friday 11th September. Supporters of Assisted Suicide have threatened unprecedented use of the Parliament Acts, to force the Bill through without the House of Lords' consent.

Enabling terminally ill adults to get help from doctors to kill themselves - assisted dying or assisted suicide - violates fundamental principles of medical ethics - to "First do no harm". Undermining the intrinsic sanctity and dignity of every human life. It would fundamentally change the relationships between the state and individual, and a doctor and their patient. No longer could an individual assume that the state or their doctor will act in their best interests. Death would be recognised as a treatment for suffering.

Calls to Action

It will be much harder for the Assisted Suicide lobby to win the House of Commons vote than the original Leadbeater Bill in 2024, which only passed by a narrow majority of 23 votes in the 3rd Reading. Only 12 MPs need to change their mind to defeat it outright in the Commons this time and, already, 7 MPs (who previously voted for the Bill) have said they will not support the reintroduction of the Bill or the threat to force it into law using  the Parliament Acts. Recent polling shows there is also no public mandate for reviving the failed Bill.

It is vital that this dangerous and unethical Bill is defeated at the Second Reading on Friday 11th September. Below are tools to lobby your MP to vote NO to Assisted Suicide on 11th September.

CALL TO ACTION: Email your MP. UKMFA have prepared a Template Letter to help you write a personal email with your concerns. Please amend to make it personal, as duplicate emails are all grouped together and treated as one."
